Illustrating Nature - Chapel Hill News

“Of Field, Forest and Fancy,” GNSI Juried Show, Chapel Hill Museum, June - Sept., 2007, Jurist’s comments on “Quiet On the Blue Ridge,” Best in Show Award:

Jean LeCluyse’s “Quiet on the Blue Ridge” is beautifully rendered in graphite and conté. The striking tree form dominates the foreground of the composition and is surrounded by softer diminishing values in the receding background hills. The intersecting branches lead your eye up the see the almost hidden owl near the top. The textures of the bark and grasses contrast with the smoother, more subtle textures in the background. The imagery is simple—a slightly off-centered tree against a background of mountains—and yet the detailed rendering is anything but simple. The composition is very well designed and the pencil use is masterful.

“Wonders of the Natural World,” GNSI Juried Show, Chapel Hill Museum, June 11 - Sept 5, 2009, Jurist’s comments on “I Sent You Hearts-a-Bustin',” Best in Show Award:

I was immediately struck by the creative presentation and superb illustration in the Hearts-a-Bustin' piece. I found it pleasing to the eye, interesting and charming. The artist, Jean LeCluyse demonstrated excellent abilities in rendering the seeds, seed pods and leaves as well as a compelling deisgn and artistry in presentation.
